BUILDING COMMUNITY & TRANSFORMING A CITY IN 30 YEARS!

No one ever said IT would be easy! Many said IT could not be done! Some said if IT could happen in Lancaster, IT could happen anywhere. The “IT” was the possibility of transforming Lancaster City into an Art Mecca. Thirty years ago, when I approached the city zoning board to inform them that I intended to transform this central business district commercial building into an Art Center which I was designing to feature Gallery Spaces, Studio Spaces, and areas for assembling, the zoning board asked me questions such as, “How many people do you expect to employ? Fifty or more?", and “Will you be considered a light manufacturer?” Both of these questions indicated to me that the zoning board members had no idea of what I was talking about or what my vision was. The zoning officers told me there really was no specific designation in the zoning code to be zoned as a gallery or studio, let alone an art center. The members wished me luck and shook their heads and sent me on my way. The rest you might say is history…removing 3,000 lbs of pigeon poop from the grain storage area which is now appropriately where are restrooms are, working two winters with no heat (it was warmer outside on Grant St than it was inside our building), only two light bulbs on our 2nd floor, 3 new sets of 80 windows throughout the building, designing 4 restrooms & 2 kitchens, and suffering 13 years with a bad roof! Enjoy reading the articles below to appreciate the remarkable milestone we have achieved!
