Tim Nies : Worlds Within Worlds

"Planetary movement, atomic activity, root structure, capillary action and the wave particle duality of light and water are all examples of self-similarity," says artist Tim Nies. It is the dynamic beauty of this concept that he examines in his new exhibit, Worlds Within Worlds, at Mulberry Art Studios this April. The public is invited to meet the artist and view his exciting new collection during a First Friday opening reception on April 4th from 5:00pm until 8:00pm in the Mulberry Ballroom. Sunday receptions will be held from 1:00pm until 4:00pm on April 6th and 13th.

"I feel that a single media can be very limiting and an idea should be translated into artwork by way of whatever media or medium fits the purpose best," says Nies. Therefore, the pieces included in the Worlds Within Worlds exhibit are made from, but not limited to, the following: steel, brass, cement, fabric, wood, paint, found objects of various size and age, rust, magnets, aluminum, tree limbs, and dirt.

Tim Nies has been creating art throughout his entire life. He began taking college courses in art while still in high school, and at age 17 he was accepted to the nation’s first art academy, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Nies is currently the Head Scenic Artist at Atomic Design Inc., a full service production and scenic design company. Nies has had his work appear on numerous television productions and at The Metropolitan Opera House. He has also created work for artists such as Alicia Keys, Ozzy Osborne, Martina McBride and Motley Crue.

Paul Stewart

Paul Stewart was a resident artist at Mulberry Art Studios for thirteen years, and the gallery is thrilled to have this exceptional artist return with his collection of photography and colored pencil work for an exhibit this April. The public is invited to come out and meet the artist at a First Friday reception on April 4th from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. Two Sunday receptions will be held from 1:00pm until 4:00pm on April 6th and 13th. Mulberry Art Studios hold gallery hours on weekdays from 10:00am until 4:00pm with evenings and weekends available upon request.

The artwork in this exhibit spans over many years, from Paul's earliest colored pencil pieces to his most recent adventures in photography. Each piece tells its own story, many revolving around the theme of historical transportation, such as abandoned railroads and canals. Paul finds inspiration all around him, often in places where he has traveled and explored. His distinctive technique with colored pencils has been compared with and confused with other medias such as oils, acrylics, watercolors and even airbrush. "I like to paint with the pencils rather than draw" Paul explains, "I build up thick layers of pigment until I can move the colors around like an oil painting." He finds this process to be relaxing, and it allows him to get as much or as little detail as he desires.

In 1992, Paul Stewart began his own company, Ideal Images, which provided services such as commercial art, sign painting, t-shirts, computer graphics, and colored pencil work. In 2001 he added picture framing to his repertoire. In 2002 he acquired antique binding equipment and taught himself traditional bookbinding, which he presently employs to provide new bindings for other artists and photographers. Ideal Images was located at Mulberry Art Studios from 1994 until 2007, when Paul decided to move his studio to his home. Tracy Feldman : Water Works

Tracy Feldman’s exhibit, Water Works, is a collection of her recent acrylic and oil paintings related to the theme of water and/or the sea. Tracy Feldman’s latest collection of paintings, entitled Water Works, will be on display during Downtown Lancaster’s Spring Artwalk, April 18th-20th, at Mulberry Art Studios. Artwalk hours are Friday 5pm- 8pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday noon until 5pm. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 North Mulberry Street, Lancaster.

Tracy is a realist who describes her style as “reality with a twist”; some of her most recent works show her attempts to expand her style to include a more-abstract, cubist-influenced twisting of reality. Tracy has always enjoyed using water as her subject, and noticed that some images with water scenes of inland streams, lakes, or oceans have found their way into all of her shows. She decided to focus entirely on water for this exhibit because, “I recently found out that my brother-in-law, an avid diver and underwater photographer, would be away from his beloved water for a while, so it inspired me to get together Water Works in honor of our shared interest in this topic” Tracy explains. Tracy has even used a number of his photographs as jumping off points for some of her newest pieces, including a small loose rendering of a sea turtle he photographed off Hawaii. Several of her newest, cubist twistings of reality are also are inspired by her brother-in-law’s undersea images.

Burt Aulisio : Back From Space

Back From Space, the cosmic art exhibit from local artist Burt Aulisio, will be on display during Downtown Lancaster’s Spring Artwalk, April 18th-20th, at Mulberry Art Studios. Artwalk hours are Friday 5pm- 8pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sunday noon until 5pm.

Back From Space is a compilation of images that are purely extraterrestrial. They are not of this world but of distant worlds and galaxies. Inspired from images of NASA and readings of different worlds by a host of Sci-Fi authors, this series provides the viewer a glimpse of the color, wonder and awe of the heavenly cosmos. Burt Aulisio explains his fascination with space by saying, “Since the time that man first looked to the heavens at night- our curiosity of the Cosmos has been unending. What lies above us has and will continue to be the eternal dream of all mankind. As technology advances, our understanding of the Cosmos increases, while at the same time; rises new and perplexing questions that will remain unanswered for eons to come. Color to an artist is the lifeblood of their being and the Heavens are filled with it. My works provide a glimpse of what is and could be in the vast expanse of space, and the many colors that exist within it.” For more information on Burt Aulisio and his work, please visit www.galacticart.com.

Jeff Kromer : Various Works

Various Works, the latest exhibit from local artist Jeff Kromer, will be exhibited in the North Gallery at Mulberry Art Studios from April 3rd until April 29th. The public is invited to come out and meet the artist at a First Friday opening reception on April 4th from 5pm until 8pm, or during a Sunday reception on April 13th from 1pm until 4pm. This exhibit will also be featured during Downtown Lancaster’s Spring ArtWalk.

After years of working in the mental health field, Jeffrey Kromer’s artwork has become heavily influenced by the human condition and the psychological components involved in creating imagery."I’m interested in how we view and relate to one another, how we’re treated as human beings and the hierarchies that exist within a society" says Kromer. The method Kromer uses to create his pieces involves building images upon one another. He draws with charcoal on a canvas, board or paper and then sprays fixative over it to allow him to drag the image around before applying paint and gel medium. The final piece can take 3 days or 3 months before it is complete. "While this at times can be frustrating, it’s also very rewarding when a work comes to fruitation" explains Kromer. "The formal qualities in a work and how I arrived there are just as important, if not more important than the final product."

Jeffrey Kromer has exhibited in Washington, DC, Georgia, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania, including two previous shows at Mulberry Art Studios. He received his Bachelor of Fine Art- Painting in 1991 at Savannah College of Art and Design, and went on to recieve his certification in Art Education at Millersville University in 1993.
