Mark KromerMark Kromer:
Portraits in Solitude

Mark Kromer will be bringing a collection of his drawings to Mulberry Art Studios this October.

The exhibit, entitled Portraits in Solitude, opens with a First Friday Reception on October 6 from 5pm until 9pm, and will remain up until the end of the month.

The pieces that make up Portraits in Solitude are studies in those quiet moments when you are all alone. "I am recreating that almost expressionless look and demeanor that is no longer affected by the outside world and the toils of daily life" explains Kromer. The works are executed in graphite in order to capture this solitude. Kromer begins with a loose sketch and then layers in random details. He finds that this process leaves space for spontaneous effects within the work.

Mark Kromer was born in 1975 and grew up in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. He came from a creative household, the son of wood carver Elmer Kromer and the younger brother of painter Jeff Kromer. At a young age he was fascinated by the fantasy and sci-fi art of the 70's and 80's, but was increasingly influenced by his brother’s work and later by the art of his art teacher, Richard Huck. During his early years he had created illustrations for various venues including album covers for several bands. Currently he focuses his efforts on portraiture.

Friends and fans of the late Jeff Kromer, a local artist known for creating artwork that was a fusion between abstract figurative and surrealism, who come out to see his brother Mark's exhibition at Mulberry Art Studios this October, will be treated to three pieces of Jeff's work from Mark's personal collection.

The pieces are done in graphite, the same media in which Mark currently works, and date back to the 90s. These pieces "have had a definite influence on me" says Mark. "It's only three, but the most important to me." The nod from one brother to another  is especially meaningful within the setting of this particular art exhibit, as it will be hanging on the walls as Mark gets married in the gallery this October.

Mark Kromer's exhibit, Portraits in Solitude, will open with a First Friday Reception from 5pm-9pm on October 6, and will remain on display throughout the month of October. Jeff Kromer's three graphite drawings will be exhibited alongside this collection.

Jeff Kromer graduated with a BFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design and acquired teacher certification from Millersville University. His work belongs in numerous collections and has been exhibited in the United States and Europe. Jeff Kromer showed his work at Mulberry Art Studios multiple times and was always well received.

He passed away in October 2014 at the age of 45.
