The Baroque Suite: Choreographed by Valerie Henry on The Grant Street Dance Company.
A well known and beloved piece in the standard classical repertoire is Handel’s Water Music. A contemporary of Handel, G. P. Telemann also wrote a Water Music Suite which, although not as well known, is a delightful work. It is light, melodic, and full of dynamic contrast. There is an affinity between the modern mind and the baroque that makes this music readily accessible. This affinity is the genesis of a choreographic idea that is presented in this dance. It is modern in conception but informed by authentic baroque style and movement. The result is a synthesis that combines elegance, restraint, emotional expression, and even a touch of comic relief. If you are familiar with Telemann’s suite, I invite you to come see this interpretation. If you are unfamiliar with it, I especially invite you to discover a treasure from the baroque era.
Valerie Henry comes to Lancaster after spending over 20 years performing, choreographing and teaching in Australia, Russia, Ukraine, France, South Africa, and many other nations of the world. Her choreography has been performed on a wide variety of stages from the Sydney Opera House, Kallang Theatre (Singapore), Jerusalem Convention Center to the San Jose Center for
Performing Arts. For 17 years, a significant part of her artistic work was based in Jerusalem, Israel where she helped to develop the international dance company Tabernacle, serving as it’s main choreographer and one of its soloists.
To celebrate Grant Street Dance Theater’s 10 year anniversary in 2007, Ms. Henry reconstructed Charles Weidman’s Brahms’s Waltzes on the company and has reconstructed Labanotation scores for F & M & Belhaven Universities. In 2011, with the combined efforts of many Lancaster County dance studios, she produced a documentary on ballet mistress Nadine Revene. Ms. Henry is developing Dance Mosaic & Dance Discovery of Lancaster, located at the beautiful Mulberry Art Studios, with satellite classes in Quarryville & Columbia, Pa. Ms. Henry is also director of dance ministry at the Tabernacle Church, in Laurel, Md. and on adjunct faculty, Belhaven University, Jackson, Miss.
